In general, people tend to purchase the belt drive openers if they are looking for a quiet opener. The ½ HP is great, and the DC motor will be even quieter. Chain drives, while extremely durable, are known to be louder, however, if you opt for a ¾ HP or DC chain drive motor it will offer some noise reduction as well.
-
Most of the time, a ½ HP unit is more than enough to efficiently lift a standard garage door, whether single or double. Since the springs on the door are what actually do the lifting, horsepower will not make a lot of difference. If you have an oversized or extremely heavy door, you may opt for a ¾ HP or DC motor. But, in general, if the springs are not properly balanced, the door will likely strip out any opener of any horsepower in place.
-
Deciding between belt drive or chain drive? They are both excellent units. Key differences are that chain drives will be a little more economical, and belt drives are known to be quieter. However, if you go with an upgraded chain drive such as a DC or ¾ HP it will offer some noise reduction as well.

Yes! There is such a wide range of quality when it comes to garage door openers. Some may be rated to last 7-10 years while often getting less than that. Some are rated to last 20-30 years with minimal repairs. It is extremely important to choose a brand that you trust! We hand pick our manufacturers such as Chamberlain and LiftMaster Professional that are known for their durability, strength, lifecycle, and advanced technological and safety features.
-
Our goal is always to repair it first, but below are some reasons you may choose to replace instead:
You are looking to upgrade because of technology or safety
Your current motor is old and at the end of its days
Replacement parts can no longer be found for your opener
Replacing makes more sense financially when considering the repair cost
You installed a new door that requires a stronger motor
-
Our battery back up openers are quite popular! The benefits to the battery backup are:
If you lose power, often the opener will be reset wiping out all codes to remotes, cars, keypad, and they will need to be reprogrammed.
If your power is out when you arrive home, your opener will still open the door with a battery backup unit.
-
Most of the time, yes! If you have a compatible car model, we can program the opener directly to the buttons in your car with the HomeLink® feature.
-
We definitely can! However, we do highly recommend our openers for a few reasons. Firstly, we hand pick top of the line openers and, most of the time, retail home improvement stores will not carry these commercial grade openers. If you are able to find the opener online, it normally will not come with the rail because it is a solid steel rail and tough to ship. Secondly, after purchasing the opener and then paying an installer, pricing will probably be similar. Lastly, our warranty will be much longer and cover both parts and labor vs only labor for a shorter time.
-
We have many options! Most of our openers will come stock with features such as rolling code technology, Wi-Fi enabled, remote access with free myQ app, remote controls, safety reversal, car button programming through HomeLink. Some additional optional features will include battery backup, Bluetooth technology, built-in two way camera, LED lighting, Amazon Key (secure grocery and package delivery), and more!

“Very happy with your experience with O'Brien garage doors. They were able to fix our badly dented garage door and make necessary repairs for a reasonable price. They were easy to work with and we appreciate it! Thank you!”

“The spring broke on our overhead garage door, and we needed to get the car out to get to the airport. O'Brien came out first thing the next morning and installed a new spring. Service was great and our technician was great to deal with.”
